B119, Environmental Science Building Date: December 13th (Friday) Film: Monty Halls' Great Escape: Programme 3 & Inside Nature's Giants: The Whale In a Turkish headquarters the world's top earthworm scientists concoct a plan to find and name their ultimate discovery. Nothing will stop them as they travel to all corners of the world with spades, GPS worm locators and secret worm outing fluids to unearth their prize. But love turns savage when things don't go to plan and the worm gets the upper hand. An epic adventure into an underground science and an unstoppable passion. Life Force' fuses blue-chip natural history with cutting-edge science documentary in an exploration and celebration of evolution. A tale of three African lakes set in an aquatic world of vibrant color, shape and movement. In these waters live over 1,000 fish species, all evolved from a single family. To survive among thieves, bullies, cheats and tricksters, these fish are evolving faster than any other vertebrate on the planet. Marine biologist and professional diver Monty Halls turns his back on city life to become a 21st century beachcomber on the West Coast of Scotland. He's travelled the world but thinks the West Coast is more beautiful than anywhere else on the planet. At last he's got the chance to fulfil his dream of living on a remote beach, exploring the islands and bays in search of some of the UK's most spectacular wildlife. In this programme, Monty goes in search of basking sharks. Even though they're the second biggest fish in the ocean finding one is no easy task. Inside Nature's Giants' dissects the largest animals on the planet to uncover evolutionary secrets and through the study of their anatomy we see how an animal works. The team dissect a 65 foot fine whale stranded off the coast of Ireland. Whale anatomist Joy Reidenberg flies in from New York to stop the animal exploding as it expands on the beach and veterinary scientist Mark Evans helps investigate why it died and explores its extraordinary anatomy. Meanwhile Richard Dawkins explains the evolutionary problems that have to be overcome to transform a land-based mammal into an animal that swims among fish. 李莉莉 環境學院 自然資源與環境學系 電話:03-8633335 傳真:03-8633260
