Having Grace, Y.T., Tong the famous calligrapher to write the two Chinese characters of “Chasing Spirit” (追魂), Annie, Shaoying, Lin the Golden Melody Awards winner to compose, and some poets to adopt novel and modern techniques for creation, the “Chasing Spirit” presents a brand-new way to interpret poetry. It is the fourth year for the annual “Chasing Spirit” series. As usual, the premiere was given to Eslite, then went on at different locations including National Museum of Taiwan Literature, National Central University, Arts Center of New Taipei City, Art Festival of Chung Yuan Christian University, and Folk Cultural Artifacts Exhibition Hall in Matsu, etc., and finally arrived at National Dong Hwa University. In order to cope with the special features of eastern Taiwan, both the producer Grace Tong and the composer Annie Lin decided to reconstruct the concert by inviting the famous poet, Mr. Xiang Yang, to read aloud the 365-lined long poem, Wushe, accompanied by different music pieces including Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, the Nakasi in early Taiwan, the Atayal sound and rhyme, Jazz, R&B, etc., to present a story-telling-like cinematic and musical poetry, which will last for 30 minutes. In addition, since the content of the poem covers Hualien County, the latter half of the concert will invite Mr. Wen-Wei Hsiu, a poet and the Professor of NDHU’s Department of Sinophone Literatures, to read aloud the Growing Poetry in Sugarcane Field as a dedication to Prof. Ching-Mao Cheng, who established the Department of Sinophone Literatures in 1996, also an expectation to spread NDHU’s humanistic beauty and spirit via the combination of poetry and songs across the Hualien plane. An informal discussion will be held in the afternoon before the concert to share the process of creation.
